One of the greatest challenges that affect women across the globe is that of getting sexually molested. These are events that leave the victims with emotional scar that last an entire lifetime. Sexual abuse is an act that underline inhumane and horrors of torment for women. However, the horrors are understatement when the victims are children. Majority of the women that have experienced rape, have had the ordeal happen to them in their tender ages. Recovering from such memories and scars of horrendous torment can mean between living a productive life and the borderline of committing suicide.
In a study by Morrow and Smith published in the year 1995, the authors describe what some of the women that have survived the ordeal and managed to cope with the emotional scars have gone through to get to where they are emotionally. Sexual abuse for women causes a lot of fear, which is understandably so, given that more than 40% of women in the United States and in Canada having had the experience (pg 24). This does not also leave out the men as they also experience the ordeal, giving a figure of more than 18%. This figure shows just how pandemic the vile is and the effects that are always much more than the figures would indicate. Practitioners helping the women that are suffering from psychological and physical trauma resultant from such abuses, use the construct approach and the symptoms to try and understand and respond accordingly.
Most of the research published in the past tried to show the problems that the women experience, thereby drawing on the negative aspects of the experiences and the emotional turmoil associated with these ordeal. However, there is a different perspective that looks at the positive aspects of the various mechanisms that the women have used to make sure that they cope with the trauma.
According to the results and discussion of the paper, for every woman that has been sexually abused as a child there have been cultural factors aiding to the assault and characteristically there are different forms of abuse that the victims have gone through (pg 26). This is followed by dangerous feelings and feeling powerless and out of control. In most cases there are intervening conditions that span rewards, resources, victim’s age, culture and the family dynamics.
