Knowing our history is the key to understanding what we have to do in the present society. Did you know that the first African to arrive on Manhattan Island was a free black man? He lived there for many years and was even able to marry a Native American. Rodrigues was regarded as an Atlantic Creole, one who had a significant part in the colonization of North America. Another Atlantic Creole, this time in Maryland, was Mathias de Sousa. He was of Portuguese and African descent and was employed by the Jesuits. De Sousa was a freeman who could enjoy the freedoms and obligations of his fellow white colonizers. He was an integrated member of the community, as he was able to vote, sign contracts, and was even permitted to lead a trading expedition. However, De Sousa was eventually buried in debts, which led to him becoming an indentured servant.
