Organizational climate is a set of standard properties in the workplace that directly or indirectly influence the behavior of the employees. It is hereditary as the older staff members of the company pass it on to the younger staff members thereby influencing the behavior and the perceptions at the workplace. These behavior patterns and perceptions actually build the image of the organization. The assessment of organizational climate is quite easy and is less cumbersome to change. The analysis can be done at an individual level or even carried on to the group/organization level (Maamari, 2012). Standards have been set to help quantify organizational culture. Organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) surrounds the positive and constructive actions employees do for the benefit of the organization. OCB encompasses three critical aspects which influence its perception; these aspects include
OCB pertains to discretionary behavior excluded in the job description and are done out of personal choice
OCB extends outside the enforceable requirements of the organization in the job description
OCB influences the effectiveness of the organization in sustaining and achieving its mission.
Organizational climate and OCB are critical to the performance of the organization as they influence directly or indirectly the employees’ morale, behavior and perception which are key to their overall performance (Maamari, 2012). Individual performance by the employee will contribute to the overall organizational performance.
The research attempts to establish the relationship between organizational climate, demographics and OCB. The dependent variables in the study included Compliance, Civic Virtue, Sportsmanship and Altruism. The research focused more on these major dependent variables: Compliance, Civic Virtue, Courtesy and Altruism. Compliance had five items on the scale which attempted to gauge the employees’ behavior with regard to the organization’s rule or job requirements. Courtesy comprised four items on scale and it attempted to measure social skills and stature in the organization.
