In simple terms, project management is the application of skills, tools, knowledge and techniques in projecting activities so as to meet the requirement of a given project. It is undertaken through the use of certain processes such as executing, initiating, planning, controlling, and closing. Additionally, this term is in some occasions used to explain an approach by an organization with regard to the management of the current operations. For an organization to reach the level of management excellence according to Kerzner, it has to employ a repetitive process described as management methodology. This repetitive process is employed in all successful projects in the organization. An effective approach is when the company supports only one methodology for the project management. Effective methodologies are those which incorporate other processes in the management methodology. Kerzner adds that in future, organizations may be required to incorporate more of their business processes in the management methodology. Although the organizations may employ these methodologies, human beings are expected to execute these programs. Therefore, it is the responsibility of senior management in establishing a culture that supports project management. In this case, it is important that organizations establish the right personnel who will be able to implement the project management. An employer or manager who is deemed successful is the one who is organized, goal oriented, passionate and possesses an understanding on the commonalities of these projects.
