The article explores the costs associated with extreme weather as influenced by human interference in the climate system. In the study, the main focus of the research article was the economic costs arising from floods and droughts between 2007 and 2017 in New Zealand. The estimation was achievable through examining fourteen extreme weather events while climate modeling experiments for flood events. After computing the costs based on previously collected data, the estimates were considered not comprehensive because they underestimated the expenses incurred in managing climate change. Despite the limitation, the results were significant in providing rough estimates of the costs incurred in controlling floods and droughts. At the same time, the methodology used would be extended to assess any other impacts of climate change in New Zealand.
Critique
According to the authors, limited resources, limitations in data availability, and the modeling approach were significant issues noted in the study. Primarily, the limited resources hindered selecting a comprehensive approach that would redirect attention to all the fourteen extreme weather events caused by climate change (Frame et al., 2020, p. 794). The limitation of data availability dictated that the researchers needed to use only insured damages which were estimated at $140.48 for floods and $ 800 for drought (Frame et al., 2020, p. 786). Notably, this issue forced the researchers to leave out economic losses resulting from flood events and damages caused by droughts.
