Article Critique on Climate Change Mitigation
Summary
Nath, Aziz, and Inoue (2014) conducted a much-needed study on homestead forests. Homestead forests have long been considered crucial, especially with regard to their ecological contribution, biodiversity conservation, economic contribution, and food security. However, in this study, Nath, Aziz, and Inoue (2014) focused on the contributions homestead forests have to biodiversity conservation through alleviation of climate change effects and the economic condition of households. The study seeks to answer the question of whether homestead forests play a more important role in the people living in Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf peninsula. The role the study investigates entails the alleviation of the impact of cyclones and the floristic diversity of the homestead forests in Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf peninsula. The method used for data collection entailed homestead and vegetation surveys that helped to reveal that the homestead forests do, in fact, have a crucial economic impact on the households. Further, it was revealed that the homestead forests help mitigate the impact of cyclones that would otherwise cause devastating environmental damage.
Critique
Fails to assess the distribution of species in the forests
The impact of literacy and experience on the diversity of species in the homestead forests is one omission that I found heavily impacted the study. In the study, the researchers make an effort to address the choice of species within the homestead forests. However, this is done from the point of knowledge regarding climate change and the problems emanating from climate change. However, there was the need to consider the literacy levels of the villagers and how this impacts their choice of species. Literacy levels would help showcase the underlying reason why certain species were preferred for particular households. This would also help to judge literacy levels against the pursuit of species that guarantee higher income levels. The authors do not appear to address this concern at all and, t...
