SUNSET BOULEVARD
Sunset Boulevard is a drama film by Billy Wilder, and Charles Brackett is a Hollywood film about being in Hollywood. The film stars Gloria Swanson as Norma Desmond, a former female silent-film star trying to make a comeback in Hollywood, and William Holden as Joe Gillis, a struggling screenwriter. The story is narrated through a flashback by Joe Gillis. Gillis uses flashbacks after his death to tell the events that lead to him being killed by Norma (Cooke). The opening scene is symbolic as it describes the Sunset Boulevard mansion as a forgotten place where rats were in the pool, weeds in the yard. The mansion symbolizes the glory days of various stars like Norma, Max, and Joe that have been forgotten. Norma sees an opportunity in Gillis when she asks him to help her finish her script. Gillis is an opportunist and sets his eyes on Desmond’s wealth and ends up being Norma’lover (WILDER).
