The article constructs a framework within which to interpret building architecture and landscape architecture with the aim of disclosing the relations between the two fields, which are usually overlooked. There are five significant operations that are: reciprocity, materialism, threshold, insertion, and infrastructure. Each of the themes initiates an alternative means by which to look at the construction and the representation of the connections between building architecture, landscape architecture, city planning, and the individual inhabitants. The article identifies twenty-four projects that each contribute to the definition of operations in a unique way. The book explores the complicated relationship between buildings (architecture) and their sites (landscapes). Pollak is a specialist in architecture, while Berrizbeita is a specialist in landscape architecture. The two authors explore both the physical and phenomenal connections, and they incorporate an analysis of the significant design decisions that are applicable in linking both the outside and the inside.
The literal representations of the outside and inside are the landscape and the house, respectively. Reciprocity, in this case, refers to the flexibility that architects are free to enjoy in their practice. For instance, architects can reciprocate their usual practice with alternative engagements such as organizing the landscape.
