In their article, Yakushko et al. (2008) evaluated stress and coping mechanisms among recent immigrants and refugees (RIR) in the United States (U.S.), drawing insights from counseling practice. The study is tailored to recognize the rising stress levels among the RIR and their coping mechanisms despite the existing adjustment challenges. Although the authors did not clearly state the research hypothesis, a critical review of the article reveals that it includes an overview of the principal theories that explain stress. Second, the article examines the different stressors RIR encounter before and in the aftermath of their migration experiences. Lastly, the article offers insights for clinicians working with these populations.
