Application of Positive Psychology in Education

Article Critique Instructions:

The purpose of this assignment is to become more informed and to think critically about the ways Positive Psychology can be applied in education. To assist you in this process you will read one of the two articles provided by your instructor. These articles are provided in this Module (I've also provided links to these articles below). You are to choose one of the two articles for your Critique.
1. Critique Instructions: Read the article thoroughly paying attention to key concepts and thinking about how the article is relevant to education.
2. Formatting: Your critique paper needs to be double-spaced, 12-point font (Arial, Calibri or Times), 1" margins and 1½ to 2 pages in length. Please include the page number on the upper-right hand corner, starting with the Title Page. Please note that ½ a point will be deducted if you go over the maximum length of 2 pages. Also, keep in mind that the Title Page is not included in the page count.
3. Paragraphs: All paragraphs are indented 5 spaces. Set up your entire paper to double space. Do not put a space between paragraphs. If you are using a Mac go to Format, then Paragraphs and check the box “don’t add space between the paragraphs.”
4. The paper is divided into the following sections:
Title Page: Title of the article, your full name, the course title, and the name of your institution centered on the page, double-spaced and it should not be in bold, underlined, italicized or larger than 12-point font.
Summary: Briefly summarize the main points of the article in two paragraphs. Clearly and concisely state what the article was about – in your own words. Copying word-for-word or changing a few words is plagiarism. For a short paper such as this one, direct quotes are not acceptable. Do not give too much detail, but enough that someone reading the summary would know the general content of the article without reading it themselves.
Critical Analysis: In this section, you will provide your critique of the article. Describe any problems you had with the author's premise, methods, or conclusions. You might focus your critique on problems with the author's argument, presentation, information, and alternatives that have been overlooked.
Applications: In this section, you will reflect on what you learned and gained from reading this article. Address all of the following questions in a narrative format. Do not use the Q&A format.
What is the main goal of the authors?
Briefly refer to a research study mentioned in the article. What is a positive or negative aspect to the study?
What positive psychology theories and/or strategies were mentioned in the article? How does it relate to what you are learning in the course?
Did the article leave you with any questions? If so, what were they?
How might this information be helpful to you personally or professionally in the future?
What are some other practical implications that can be gleaned from the article?
Please note that a Reference page is not required for this assignment, just the title page.

Summary
The article focuses on how students can achieve desired educational outcomes through the self-determination theory. The theory focuses on how individuals can promote a student's interest in learning, their value for education, and their confidence in their attributes. When a student is interested in learning something, it will become easy for them to comprehend. They would have sufficient courage to overcome the challenges associated with the concept (Deci et al., 1991). A value for education also motivates students to learn because they understand the importance of studying. Without an understanding of the value of education, students would not feel motivated to learn, and in turn, they would not achieve the best educational outcomes.
The article also focuses on the various social-contextual factors contributing to intrinsic motivation. These factors also promote internalization, thus facilitating the learner to achieve the best educational outcomes. These factors' impact might vary from student to student, hence explaining the different levels of motivation among learners. If a factor motivates a student, they will learn the value of education and work hard to achieve the best results.
Critical Analysis
The author focuses on motivation as the main factor contributing to the best educational outcomes. A major focus is erected on the fact that unmotivated students are likely to quit while motivated ones would stay in school. The concept is not always true because a student's cognitive capabilities play a major part in determining the educational outcome. For instance, a student t with high cognitive capabilities would perform well in class regardless of whether or not they are motivated. ...
