Background
Big Problem
Drug abuse is a common problem in society. Unfortunately, the problem is not only limited to adults but is also common in learning institutions. Alcoholism among learners is dangerous because it interferes with their learning and development. Therefore, it is important to establish the causes of the problem and address it as fast as possible.
Current Problem
The alcohol consumption policies implemented in colleges and universities to reduce alcohol consumption among students have not been as effective as expected. Consequently, the study seeks to establish the role of knowledge and attitudes in reducing campus alcohol policies (Marshall et al., 2011). Unfortunately, the authors do not highlight this problem. Instead, they leave it up to the reader to identify.
Aim/Purpose
While the authors highlight the purpose of their study, which is to extend the literature on knowledge about and attitudes towards campus alcohol policies in relation to drinking behavior, there are no research questions or hypotheses. Having some research questions, objectives/aims, or hypotheses would have provided better insights into what the researchers intend to achieve.
Research Method
Research Design
The authors used a quantitative research design. They used a self-report questionnaire as the survey instrument to measure the quantity and frequency of drinking among college learners. They then used a univariate analysis and Tukey’s Honestly Significant Difference (HSD) post hoc comparisons to compare alcohol use across different levels of campus policies knowledge and attitudes (Marshall et al., 2011).
Data Collection
The study took place at a northeastern public university and included four hundred and twenty-two freshmen students. This number was approximately 25% of the freshmen class who engaged in the written survey (Marshall et al., 2011). The inclusion criteria were that all the students were supposed to be freshmen and had to undergo a new student seminar to learn about the institution’s policies and practices. This idea was appropriate because new students tend to be more obedient towards school policies, and the researchers would get a better representation of the responses.
Data Analysis
After collecting the information, the researchers analyzed the data using univariate analysis and Tukey’s Honestly Significant Difference (HSD) to compare the rate at which the students consumed alcohol at different levels of ...
