Article Citation in APA Format: Arends, S. A., Thodé, M., De Veer, A. J., Pasman, H. R. W., Francke, A. L., & Jongerden, I. P. (2022). Nurses' perspective on their involvement in decision‐making about life‐prolonging treatments: A quantitative survey study. Journal of Advanced Nursing, 78(9), 2884-2893. https://doi.org/10.1111/jan.15223
Purpose of Study: The study investigated hospital nurses' perceptions of their current and preferred roles within a shared decision-making framework concerning the potential for life-sustaining interventions among palliative care patients (Arends et al., 2022).
Research Design: Identify the research design. Discuss whether it is appropriate for the topic under investigation. Is it appropriate? How do you know?
A cross-sectional quantitative study is appropriate for the issue under investigation. This is the case because the researchers sought to employ data to derive statistical conclusions concerning nurses' opinions with respect to supporting patients in making decisions about potential life-sustaining medical interventions. Also, I know this because the cross-sectional quantitative study proved insufficient to establish a direct cause in the phenomenon under investigation (Arends et al., 2022). Therefore, the researchers recommended additional research on the approaches to support nurses in their decision-making role.
Sample Selection: How was the sample selected? What type of sample was used? Was the sample size adequate given the scope of the study? How do you know?
The sample was selected from a countrywide research sample, the Nursing Staff Panel. Representative sampling was used because the panel comprised a countrywide representative sample of nursing professionals sourced from different institutions in different healthcare sectors. Based on the study's scope, the sample size (n = 502) was adequate and representative enough since only registered nurses (RNs) who were Nursing Staff Panel members filled out questionnaires linked to the study's research question (Arends et al., 2022).
Data Collection Methods: Describe the data collection procedures. Were there any issues noted during data collection that may have impacted the study outcomes? Is there another approach that could have been used to collect data? If so which approach? If not why not?
Self-developed questionnaires were used for data collection. The need to translate the Role Competency Scale on Shared Decision-Making—Nurses (SDM-N) from English to Dutch may have undermined the validity of the research outcomes. The differences in the wording of the Dutch and English version may imply that it would be difficult for the research to measure what the study was initially intended to evaluate (Arends et al., 2022). No other data collection approach could have proved more effective t...
