The primary objective of caregivers is to offer high-quality care to older people. However, older adults experience declining health conditions, and they encounter numerous challenges that require them to adapt. In particular, tiredness of life (ToL) refers to the suffering older individuals experience based on their poor quality of life. About 10% to 20% of older people experience death wishes or thoughts (Humbeeck et al., 2019). Suicidal ideation among older individuals is a natural phenomenon. The paper critiques the article "Tiredness of Life in Older Persons: A Qualitative Study on Nurses' Experiences of Being Confronted With This Growing Phenomenon" by Liesbeth Van Humbeeck et al. focuses on how caregivers confront ToL in home care and nursing home care settings.
Review of the Abstract
Humbeeck et al.'s abstract is exceptional and comprises different sections. First, the background and objectives portray the aim of the article. Second, the research design and methods show the elements of the qualitative study, such as semi-structured interviews and constructivist grounded theory (Humbeeck et al., 2019). The results section is a brief discussion of the outcomes obtained by researchers. The discussion and implications part indicates how health professionals can benefit from the concepts explained in the article. For sure, an abstract with such concise sections enables the reader to know the article's primary objective, results, discussions, and implications. In addition, it gives a good overview such that an individual knows what the article is about even before reading it.
Review of the Introduction
Although the introduction does not have subsections like the abstract, it contains all crucial elements, namely problem statement, purpose, research questions, and it is congruent with the qualitative research tradition. Specifically, the problem statement is how caregivers deal with ToL among older adults in home and nursing home care settings (Humbeeck et al., 2019). The introduction clarifies that older adults have declining health and wish to die since they lose the purpose and meaning of their lives. Social death or purposelessness make older individuals wish that they are better off dead than alive. That is why nurses should understand how to help older adults to have a purpose in life to avoid ToL.
Review of the Literature
The majority of sources used are within the last twenty years. The oldest source used was published in 1985. Nevertheless, the most significant thing is that all these sources are scholarly articles with credible and reliable data. Researchers followed the right procedure of a qualitative article. They combine both primary and secondary sources.
Most importantly, the sources used to support the research project.
