* Purpose
The study I analyzed relates to the differences between age and sex in adolescent suicide rates. Various studies have suggested that suicide rates among adolescents share similar characteristics concerning age and sex. A substantial body of literature indicates that male adolescents have a higher suicide risk than female adolescents; male adolescents have a higher suicide rate than their counterparts. Moreover, current literature suggests a direct and positive relationship between adolescent suicide rates and age; older adolescents, particularly males, have a higher suicide rate than younger adolescents. I chose the article “Differences by age and sex in adolescent suicide” by Lee et al. (2019) for the study. The study I analyzed sought to relate demographic and psychosocial characteristics of successful suicide attempts between younger and older adolescents and by sex.
A majority of similar studies have tended to treat adolescents as a homogenous population or failed to investigate the interaction between sex and age. The study aimed to expand upon current literature on Australian adolescent suicide rates by identifying how the suicide profile of adolescents varies with age and sex. To this end, the study aimed to answer the research question: How do the demographic and psychological characteristics of adolescents with completed suicides compare regarding age and sex? The study hypothesized that social and developmental changes across adolescent years and sex accounted for the differences in suicide profiles among completed suicides.
* Research Methods
The study used the observational design to investigate the differences by age and sex in adolescent suicide: no interventions were introduced when comparing social and developmental changes across adolescent years and sex. For instance, the study comprised exclusively of a retrospective review of suicide death records by the Coroners Court of Victoria (CCOV) and not a primary research study with control groups. Using secondary data collection methods was appropriate because it helped broaden the current understanding of the problem: reanalyzing past literature allowed the study to gain new insights, perspectives, and conclusions. Besides, the comprehensive nature of the secondary data meant that the study could compare different study findings spanning decades of adolescent suicide research. Secondary data contains the richest information on a study topic and is also time-saving and economical. The study investigated differences in adolescent suicide in terms of age and sex. Consequently, the data collected was both quantitative and categorical: age is a quantitative variable since the data represents amounts, while sex is a categorical variable since the data represents groups.
