The article puts the spotlight on intercultural communication in the international scene. People are quite different in terms of culture. The variations amongst different groups percolate across many spheres of practice, including communication and daily interaction. The diversity in culture in the international arena could be disruptive and a significant source of challenges if not well managed. Hinchcliff-Pelias & Greer (2004) considers intercultural communication educators an inevitable phenomenon because isolating international learners from their fellow learners in the hosting nation and other global learners is pedagogically unarguable.
At the center of the discussion, the authors highlight critical issues such as negative perceptions of international students and negative intercultural encounters as the fundamental concepts that inform the need for increased focus on intercultural communication. From the authors’ evidence, the nation hosting international students hold negative perceptions towards global learners as a group, and Intercultural interactions as experienced by international learners have been associated with increased uncertainty and increased anxiety. Based on such troublesome and unsettling interactions, international students limit their interactions or engagements with fellow learners in hosting nations or other international students from different countries. Thus, international students from specific regions or nations tend to aggregate but limit engagements with others. The authors sought to know why international students fail to adopt intercultural communication and interactions based on this observation. The findings showed that self-inadequacies such as lack of proficiency in a foreign language, cultural awareness, and risk of putting oneself into a tense situation accounted for limited intercultural interactions and communication. Another challenge included a lack of cultural sensitivity.
From the analysis of the article, the research problem revolves around challenges that impede cultural communication and interactions amongst different international students.
