The book’s introduction focuses on the propaganda model and how it has affected the functioning of the media. The model presents an analytical framework whose purpose is to provide an analysis of the functioning of the media regarding institutional relationships and structures that they operate in. The media serves a substantial role in propagandizing on behalf of societal interest that finance and control their operations. In most cases, the individuals bearing such interests have certain agendas that they wish to pass across to society (Herman and Noam: 2010). The strategizing needed in passing such agendas and principles require a lot of expertise since due to the impact that the agendas may have on the people. The media stands at a better position of broadcasting such agendas since they have a team of experienced editors and journalists to pass the necessary information effectively. The media is able to prioritize information and identify the newsworthiness of particular information that should conform to the institution's policy.
Besides, the propaganda model outlines some of the structural factors that influence the functioning of the media. Among them are the medias dependence on funding sources, control of their operations, and ownership. As well, their various mutual relationships and interests with the people who make the news contribute to the structural factors of the propaganda model.
