Annotated Bibliography Instructions:

An annotated bibliography is a list of the sources you intend to use that includes a summary of each work and an assessment of its usefulness to your essay. Document each source according to MLA guidelines just as you would on your works cited page. After each listing, write a paragraph in which you spend three to four sentences summarizing the source's information or argument, and another two to three sentences indicating how you will use that source to advance your argument. Your annotated bibliography should include at least six entries: two sources from our textbook plus four outside sources, all in alphabetical order. See the example of an annotated bibliography on the back of this prompt to get a sense of how to do it. It would also be beneficial to consult the MLA section of Rules for Writers or do a web search for “MLA annotated bibliography” for additional information and examples. The annotated bibliography is supposed to be done before your write the essay; thus it has its own, earlier, due date as indicated on the syllabus. You must also include a working thesis statement so the instructor can assess whether your sources fit your argument.
