The renaissance is period from the Middle Ages and was prominent for musicians based on the amount of discovery, innovation, and exploration that occurred. The name means “rebirth” and covers music that ranged from 1400 to 1600. The overall features of the songs written during this period is that they were supposed to be sung either as large choral pieces in church or as songs or madrigals. Understanding the renaissance period helps one to understand the origin of the different types of music and how other factors, such as culture and politics, interacted with the music to produce the different genres. The authors in the sources below explain different aspects of the music during this period. An understanding of this history is important as it helps the reader to explain the different features of musical performances.
