The text devotes to a particular divine name and other names for the godhead. The name is a description of the third differentiation within the godhead alongside personal distinction as well as attributes. There is a reference to multiple attributes of the godhead with reference to its unity despite the application of different names. The very structure of the names helps in identifying the nature of distinction available with the inclusion of the same prefix in Greek as an indicator of the unity within the godhead. These prefixes that entail either “over-” or “pre-” are applicable when referring to God himself, with each name differently referring to self-multiplication of the godhead (Jones, 2009).
In most instances, the names as applicable in the text describe more than just a personality within the godhead. For instance, the application of the name “father” is also applicable for animals referring to the male parent. Such names seem to be applicable literally to animals as much as being metaphorically representations of persons as per the godhead. However, the text reference from Pauline’s teachings, especially the letter to the Ephesians, provides a contrary claim. The description is that God the Father is authoritative and represents all nature of fatherhood in the heavens and the earth. The application of the same term “father” on animals was possible because the godhead already underwent the same relation. However, the aspect of the internal causality as presented within the godhead is viewed as the source of all existing causality. The idea applies across the structure that also includes angels because they too are described by the same names of “father” and “son” (Jones, 2009).
There is a methodological introduction that provides how the divine names relate to God. Also, the way in which such names result in differentiation and unity in the godhead. The subsequent chapter describes the importance of prayer alongside the degree of differentiation that occurs in Dionysius’ personal treatise in comparison with various scriptures alongside other works of previous authors (Jones, 2009).
