Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook are undoubtedly dominating the world of online social networking, and the willingness of many users to self-disclose personal information ranging from moods to religious affiliation, relationship status, and personal contact information has led to an increase in privacy concerns. They offer convenient opportunities to stay in touch with friends, family, and coworkers, but are people using them responsibly? Some argue that there are fundamental differences between today's digital natives, whose private and public selves are intertwined through these technologies, and older generations (Kornblum, 2007).
Even though some colleges are offering seminars on managing privacy online, we still hear stories of self-disclosure gone wrong, such as the football player from the University of Texas who was kicked off the team for posting racist comments about the president or the student who was kicked out of his private, Christian college after a picture of him dressed in drag surfaced on Facebook. However, social media experts say these cases are rare and that most students are aware of who can see what they are posting and the potential consequences (Nealy, 2009). The issue of privacy management on Facebook is affecting parent-child relationships as well. As the website "Oh Crap. My Parents Joined Facebook." shows, the results can sometimes be embarrassing for the college student and the parent as they balance the dialectic between openness and closeness once the child has moved away.

It is evident that technological advancements and particularly the growth and expansion of social media platforms have significantly revolutionized communication and interaction in society. Social media channels such as Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat and Twitter among others are undoubtedly dominating networking circles and have transformed the world into a global village. That as it may, they are also posing some negative consequences characterized by self-disclosure on personal and confidential information. Individuals are sharing information ranging from their contact, relationship status, religious affiliation, likes and dislikes, and employment details among others. As such, it has become imperative to find ways to not only manage one’s privacy but also online disclosures. To begin with, it is essential to read and understand the terms and conditions and privacy settings in all the different social media sites (Shepherd, 2012). Secondly, it is also recommended to create strong passwords that cannot be easily cracked or breached. Thirdly, it is vital to take caution when adding or following individuals and groups on the social media channels since it has been identified that almost half of social media profiles are fake. Fourthly, it is important for one not to share sensitive information that can be duplicated to impersonate them (Shepherd, 2012). For instance, having information such as one’s full names, date of birth and contact details make them susceptible to identity theft. It also makes them easy target for burglars and kidnappers who will know their whereabouts just by checking at their social media posts. Last but not least, it is recommended to use the “restricted list” setting on platforms such as Facebook. It allows for users on that list to only see the posts marked as public and not one’s private information.
