Project 3: The Annotated Bibliography Rubric
Project 3: The Annotated Bibliography
Length: 4+ Pages
150 points
The two previous projects helped lay a foundation for approaching college-level writing, analyzing and synthesizing information, and responsibly integrating expert opinions (sources). As a learning community and individually, each of you works towards finding a balance between your original ideas and assertions, enlightenment from discussions or observations of sources and course material, and acknowledgment and awareness of varying stances. You may notice that all of your projects are linked, as are the class discussions, lecture materials, and sources.
You will first write an annotated bibliography of sources you found to answer a research question. Then you will use those sources to write an academic research essay to answer the question. You will then transform the research questions into a strong thesis statement. You cannot change research questions between the two. You must complete an annotated bibliography before you can attempt Project 4. You also need to score a minimum of a D to move on to complete Project 4.
For these next two projects, our learning community will continue to focus on “algorithms.”
During Project 1, you analyzed social influencers and algorithms; for Project 2, you closely examined algorithms in the social influencer/social media realm and algorithms in the real estate realm. For Project 3, you can investigate one of the following two selections:
Algorithms and the United States criminal justice system
or
Algorithms and the United States healthcare system
The best research questions will examine one (or some combination of) the following:
- Causes of an event or situation
- Consequences of an event or situation
Step 1: The Annotated Bibliography
Throughout your college career, you will certainly have to do research. You may also be asked to produce a very specific genre of writing called the annotated bibliography. An annotated bibliography is a list of relevant, related source citations that include summary and analysis. Researchers and students produce annotated bibliographies to share information, curate sources, and to organize their thinking and research before writing.
Formulate a research question using one of the two topics:
Algorithms and the United States criminal justice system

or
Algorithms and the United States healthcare system
It should be a question that does not have a clear answer. Then, compile an annotated bibliography of at least 7 sources. 5 sources must come from the PGCC Library databases.
You must include:
1+ database reference source
2+ viewpoint/argumentative sources from the databases
1+ peer-reviewed journal article
No more than two (2) general internet sources
All sources must be appropriate for college-level coursework.
Direct this to an audience of your professor, who will approve the research before you can move on to the next project.
Once you complete the Bibliography, you’ll transform your research into an argumentative essay. You MUST complete a bibliography before your essay (Project 4) can be submitted or accepted.
Students are expected to “show their work” by completing the required process work assigned throughout the unit. I reserve the right to not accept projects where large portions of the process work are incomplete.
Process:
1.Decide on a research question related to one of the two general topics provided that you are interested in exploring. Completing the process work assigned will help you do this. The question should have rhetorical exigency. It should be an open-ended question that you do not already have an answer to. Instead, you should have curiosity about the topic.
2.Go through the required course work, which includes a general internet survey of the topic, and database research. Gather secondary resources from the databases. Be sure that you have at least one scholarly article from an academic journal.
3.Select seven sources that are appropriate to your research question and to your rhetorical situation. These should be articles that you are willing and able to read thoroughly and understand, but they should not be so simplistic or basic that your audience would find them insufficient for college-level work.
4.Provide citations in either MLA or APA formatting for each source. Try not to just use the citation generators provided within the databases, but you can use them to cross reference your citation, and be sure that you correct formatting to make your citations consistent.
5.Annotate each of the sources. Your annotation should include a one to two paragraph summary of the article’s main claims and a description of the evidence used to support those claims. It should do more than give a brief overview of the abstract. I should be able to tell that you’ve read the whole source. Then, include an additional paragraph that evaluates the source and discusses the importance of the article and the information it provides for your research question. Be sure to address exigency.
6.Compile your sources in a well-formatted, alphabetical list.
7.Write a 1-2 paragraph introduction of the overall research topic and the specific research question. You should describe your research process, give an overview of the sources that follow, and preview the information you still need to find to work on the question.
Submit
Upload your Project 3: Annotated Bibliography to the submission folder by 11:59 pm on Sunday, July 17, 2022. Be sure to check the submission for any errors.
Minimum Requirements
-The annotated bibliography presents a 1-2 paragraph introduction to introduce the research question and explain its importance. The introduction should cover the research process and preview the types of sources in the bibliography. It should also project the work that still needs to be done.
-The bibliography contains seven (7) sources. Most come from the PGCC library databases. No more than 2 are general internet sources
-ONE source must be peer-reviewed articles from a journal.
-TWO sources should be argumentative or viewpoint sources
-All sources are appropriate for a college-level essay and are complete sources--not abstracts or book reviews.
-Source entries are in either APA or MLA citation style. All citations are uniformly formatted.
-Every entry is summarized. Summaries are 1-2 paragraphs in length and include all main claims and evidence. They display your reading and understanding of the entire source.
-Every entry is analyzed for its importance to the research question and exigency. (1 paragraph)
-Sources are presented alphabetically, with their citation followed by the annotation.
-The overall format is uniform, consistent, and easy to read.
-The project has been carefully proofread, with no errors that interfere with readability.

Hackenberger (2019) presents a study on the utilization of genetic algorithms in healthcare. The study establishes that the various strategies of applying genetic algorithms (GA) in medication are continually grown, particularly in the region where the utilization of GA has generally settled, as on account of Electro diagram Imaging translation. Further turn of events and use of man-made reasoning, both in clinical science and in clinical practice, will make the improvement of GA calculations significantly more significant as far as making new, quicker, and all the more impressive GA mixtures with other numerical and computational apparatuses

Hoseini et al. (2015) present a study on the application of genetic algorithms in healthcare. In the paper, they investigate the hereditary calculation and its applications in medication. The utilization of the hereditary calculation has promising ramifications in different clinical specialties including radiology, radiotherapy, oncology, pediatrics, cardiology, endocrinology, medical procedure, obstetrics and gynecology, pulmonology, irresistible sicknesses, muscular health, recovery medication, nervous system science, pharmacotherapy, and medical services the board. This survey presents the uses of hereditary calculation in sickness screening, analysis, therapy arranging, pharmacovigilance, forecast, and medical care for the executives, and empowers doctors to imagine potential utilizations of this metaheuristic technique in their clinical profession.
