The Health Belief Model
Kıssal, A., & Kartal, B. (2019). Effects of health belief model-based education on health beliefs and breast self-examination in nursing students. Asia-Pacific journal of oncology nursing, 6(4), 403.
The study focuses on the effect of an education program based on the health belief model on nursing student’s tendency to conduct breast self-examination as an early prevention of breast cancer. The study included 48 students in their third year of study who were pretested, subjected to a 6 months to 1 year training program, and post tested. The findings showed that HBM education increased the student’s knowledge about breast cancer but did not have a significant impact on their breast cancer examination frequency.
The study shows how the knowledge and skills of nurses, as a group of healthcare service providers, can be increased using the HBM. However, it also shows that a follow up activity is needed to implement that skills because while the nurses had more skills, the additional knowledge was not put into practice. The article is relevant to the future Nurse Practitioner practice as it shows the need for additional interventions for the nurses to implement the skills they learn from the HBM.
Zeigheimat, F., Ebadi, A., Rahmati-Najarkolaei, F., & Ghadamgahi, F. (2016). An investigation into the effect of health belief model-based education on healthcare behaviors of nursing staff in controlling nosocomial infections. Journal of education and health promotion, 5.
The study evaluates the effect of the health belief model (HBM) in helping nurses adopt the necessary behaviors needed to control nosocomial infections. It included 135 nurses in which the study group received four 45 minute education programs. After a 2-month interval, a post test was conducted, which revealed that HBM-based education increased the knowledge, perceived threat, and benefit of the nurses.
The article explains how health-care acquired infections and their accompanying costs can be prevented through the Health Belief Model, a framework that guides health promotion and disease prevention programs. The article is relevant to the future of Nursing Practitioner practice as it provides insights on how nurses can make health care settings safe for both the patients and themselves.
