The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate the perception of students about indigenous issues in contemporary curricula in dental and oral health studies, potential challenges and assistance for enhancing students’ competence in indigenous culture, and any promising reforms that can effectively incorporate Indigenous culture in future education.
Inclusion criteria included students in the Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) and Bachelor of Oral Health (BOH) programs at the University of Sydney. Exclusion criteria included students from other programs other than the DMD and BOH programs and those who were not voluntary willing to participate in the exercise. Fifteen students, who met the inclusion criteria, were recruited and enrolled in the 2016-2017 study. Students were recruited through email to physically take part in semi-structured interviews. There were no dropouts from the recruited number of participants on or during the time of the interview. Participants were exposed to 15 to 60-minute face-to-face interview sessions within the school premises. The semi-structured interview questions explored the barriers and support to students to become more competent in Indigenous culture. The participants were expected to offer their responses on various issues which would be later analyzed to provide important themes. The interview audios were recorded and transcribed before being fed to NVivo 11 for processing.
