Understanding the Relationship Between Leadership and Provision of Healthcare

Term Paper Instructions:

For this assignment you are to interview a nurse leader that is in a formal leadership role. This can be someone who is in an administrative role at the level of manager or above or leading an organizational level committee (e.g. chair of the organizational level practice council, falls committee, etc.) or it can be someone who is in a leadership role in a professional organization (officer, chair of a committee). Write a 2-3-page reflection on what you learned from your leadership interview. This should not be a repeat of the question/answers asked in the interview, but an overview of what you learned and how you can use this information in your own leadership experiences. What did you learn from this interview that made the most impact on you and why? How does what you learned in the interview either validate, refute, or reinforce what you have learned about leadership, cite course readings or other literature to support this.
The following questions should be included as part of your interview. You should add 1-3 additional questions based on your interests or the position of the person you are interviewing?
1. Describe your leadership journey and how you came to the current position you are in.

Here are some additional questions you might want to add to your interview. Feel free to develop other questions to explore areas of leadership that you are interested in.
1. What is one of your current or past challenges that will or did require a change for those you work with and what strategies do/did you use to get people on board with the change that is/was needed? If this was a past change what lessons did you learn?
2. How do you foster engagement and acknowledge excellence in others?
3. What leadership skills do you think are critical for front-line nurses (staff and APRN) not in administrative roles?
4. What has been your greatest influence as a leader?
5. Do you feel it’s important to delegate? If so, why? When is a good time to delegate?
6. What actions do you believe are essential to enable others to be successful?

Understanding the relationship between leadership and the provision of healthcare is essential for any nursing professional. It allows him to appreciate better how crucial good leadership is when it comes to improving the quality of healthcare and striving to become a leader that would further improve it. In this article, I would like to reflect on this relationship after interviewing Tina Wyatt. Tina Wyatt is the Director of Nursing in Shawnee Christian Village and is a proponent of transformative and holistic treatment in her organization. I chose her for my interview because I believe that a nurse leader must always strive to influence others to give importance to a holistic treatment that considers the patient's physical, emotional, cultural, and spiritual beliefs. Thus, in the succeeding sections of this paper, I would like to reflect further on how the interview helped further my desire to become a nurse leader and a proponent of change in the healthcare field.
Interview
One of the main questions that I asked Wyatt was about her leadership journey. As a response, she told me about how she started as a nursing graduate, volunteering in medical missions for NGOs, establishing local community clinics, and taking up further education, among others. After the interview, I realized that being a nursing leader requires both personal and professional motivation to succeed. Notably, rather than just taking up all the required courses and subjects, one must also be motivated to help others. Wyatt said that even if academic qualifications are foremost essential to ensure proper medical treatment is provided, the professional's concern and desire to help improve treatment in ways that we might not even be aware of CITATION Ren12 \l 1033 (Renaud, Rutledge, & Shepherd, 2012).
Another set of questions that I asked Wyatt was her definition of leadership in the healthcare setting and the values that she has in her leadership career. According to her, leadership is a term that has a comprehensive meaning that includes the capacity to help, lead, and implement changes that would benefit every stakeholder of the treatment process. As a nurse leader, she noted how leadership could help guide each healthcare professional towards a single goal and that this can be achieved by sticking to one's moral and principal values. In line with my experience, I realized that my definition of leadership is similar to Wyatt's but with one important concept – system. As a future nursing leader, I believe that it is essential to emphasize the importance of using evidence-based practice, regulatory protocols, and administrative planning, among others, to ensure that the organization is operating in its optimal setting. However, I also believe that in doing so, a good interpersonal relationship ...
