The first person, “I” narrator of Mo Yan’s story, is a son of Dougan. The speaker in the Mo Yan’s tale is the grandfather to commander Yu, grandson to grandma Dai Fenglian. The setting of the narrative is in Northeast Gaomi Township, Shandong province, China.
The narrator describes sorghum in his hometown as an anchor that provided wine, food, and shelter to people.
