The Comparison/Contrast Essay Guidelines

For this assignment you are to write a 5-7 paragraph essay comparing some aspect of two of the assigned readings covered thus far in class. Your essay should be a comparison of some literary elements of the writings. You may choose to compare two stories, authors, characters, etc. For example, you may want to compare the role of religion, regional influences, or gender roles in the works of two different authors, or examine differences or similarities in the language, theme, plot, etc; the possibilities are endless. Below is a suggested format for your paper.
Paragraph 1 should include a brief biography of both authors and a 1-2 line synopsis of both subjects. Next, you should establish common ground between your two subjects (ex: Faulkner and Welty are both southern gothic writers, etc) This paragraph should end with a thesis statement that points out at least three similiarities or differences in the two works.
Paragraphs 2-4: Use either a subject by subject, or point by point structure as discussed in class. This should be a detailed discussion of the similarities or differences and include textual evidence (with page numbers) of your assertions whenever possible. For example, if you are examining the differences in how Faulkner and Welty deal with race or religion in their work you should quote from passages in the text that illustrate these differences.
The concluding paragraph should include a summary of the major ideas presented in the body of the paper and it shoud revisit the thesis statement. Due date: Thursday, July 11

Comparative Analysis of the Female Protagonists in Kate Chopin’s “The Storm” and “The Story of an Hour”
Kate Chopin is an American author known to write literary pieces for a wide variety of readers. Chopin's work often times touch daring topics that are too controversial during their era as a form of self expression and address compelling social issues (Beer, 1). Chopin's highly celebrated works are mainly about her portrayal of women that displays passionate behaviors that are considered inappropriate by society's standards (3). The short stories, “The Storm” and “The Story of an Hour” by Chopin, both present the story of a married woman that showed inappropriate conduct towards the conventional norms of society. In “The Storm,” the female protagonist committed adultery, while in “The Story of an Hour,” the female protagonist felt happiness upon knowing her husband’s death. Although both of these short stories portray similarity in themes, the comparisons of inappropriate conduct of the wives resulting from: the circumstance of marriage, repressed desires, and freedom from husbands, should be further discussed as these reasons tempted the female protagonists to act the way they did.
The circumstance of marriage of the two married wives contributed to their inappropriate actions. In both stories, the wives felt an unsatisfying feeling towards their marriage. In "The Storm," Calixta and Alcée were passionate lovers in the past; however, they married different people. The unrequited love of their past created a crack in both Calixta and Alcée’s marriage that made them commit to adulterous acts.
