The Metamorphosis
In the final pages of The Metamorphosis, Gregor Samsa leaves his room one final time to listen to his sister play violin. Of the people assembled in the living room, he is the only one who reacts to her playing with sensitivity. He wonders, “Was he an animal if music stirred him that way?” (Franz, 45) There are so many themes throughout the story but at the centre of the story, relationships that exist between the characters are affected by metamorphosis of the Gregor Samsa who is the protagonist. Even though the relationship between Gregor and his father is Paramount, his relationship with his sister Grete is more important (Saʻdāwī, 145). This is because it is with Grete that Gregor had sort a connection after undergoing his metamorphosis. Grete went through her metamorphosis from a child to a woman but Gregor underwent his metamorphosis during his final demise.
The reaction of Gregor Samsa when the sister is playing violin is used to symbolize the climax of the metamorphosis of Grete. When the lodgers listen to her as she plays the violin in the other room, they get interested in listening to the play of violin (James, & Nic Amy, 159). When the sister decides to play the violin for the lodgers Gregor is drawn by the music and during the display most of the people do not like him but he decides to put all the considerations for others. “He felt as if the way were opening before him to the unknown nourishment he craved…He felt hardly any surprise at his growing lack of consideration of others” (Franz, 48).
