- The frontal lobe controls so many functions that damage to it can lead to major repercussions. It is involved in “motor function, problem solving, spontaneity, memory, language, initiation, judgement, impulse control, and social and sexual behavior” (Centre for Neuroskills 2016). Damage to the left frontal lobe will affect language and verbal skills as well as positive emotions while damage on the right frontal lobe will affect a person’s capacity to communicate non-verbally, and perception of negative emotions. There is no known cure for frontal lobe damage but physical, speech and behavioral therapy may restore lost functions.
- The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines emotions as “a natural instinctive state of mind deriving from one’s circumstance, mood or relationship with others”. Neuroscientists have discovered that there are brain circuits involved in emotion. One way the brain can make feelings is summarized by the chart below (Doux 2000 p.176)
- Learning is a person’s capacity to acquire a skill or knowledge while memory is an expression of the learning that has been acquired. As we continue to learn, our brain continuously evolves, and it helps us attain new skills and knowledge at a greater speed than before. These new learnings are then stored in our memory, so that we don’t have to learn them again. Together, learning and memory expand...
