Congressional Ethics
Ethics refer to codes of conduct that govern the behavior of various people within a society or an organization. In the Congress, there are the particular set of manners in which all congressmen and women must adhere to. Occasionally, some members are found guilty of violating the codes set aside. One such person is the US representative, Ed Whitfield. The charges of violation of the codes of conducts were lobbying people for personal interest.
Ed Whitfield was used by his wife and employer to mobilize members of the Congress to vote the legislation that she was supporting. Whitfield’s wife was reported to have lobbied members in her contact list to back up the bill for three years. After persuading her husband, Ed Whitfield, in turn, supported the idea. He also went ahead to give influence to his colleagues to support the move. The legislation was for the benefit of the National Human Society in which Whitfield’s wife was an active lobbyist.
The federal Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) found out that Whitfield was guilty. He had questions to answer. He violated the codes of conducts of the Congress by his actions. First, he used his office to give out special favors to his wife and her manager. In doing this, he disregarded the standards of the codes of conducts that declared such acts illegal. Secondly, he proceeded to influence the congress members to vote the legislation. He organized meetings for Congress members to back up and facilitate the plan.
It is clear that Ed Whitfield violated the congressional skills. As a congressman, he knows how to use his office. Lobbying is unethical particularly if it is utilized for the benefit of others. From the records and evidence, he organized 100 meetings to allow his wife, a lobbyist of National Human Society influence them in voting. Besides, he was paid to carry out all the plans. Whitfield, therefore, is corrupt justifying the charges.
