Re:Topic 1 DQ 1      comments on these post

As a child growing up in rural Southwest GA I have heard stories from my parents telling me of their experiences as children growing up in the segregated south in the 1960's. My parents would recall stories where people of color were assigned to designated areas to eat, sit on buses and sit in certain areas in the movie theaters. My realization of how race and culture played a vital part of how people were treated, occurred by watching on television the riots over the shooting deaths of Trayvon Martin in Sanford Florida and Michael Brown in Ferguson Missouri. The senseless shooting deaths of these young men were an eye opening experience to me, that racism and cultural differences are still prevalent across the United States. Many people of color are stereotyped negatively in the news media, movies, and in society as a whole. African American males are stereotyped as drug dealers, gang members, and thieves by the how they talk, and dress. Still even today's society, African American males (rather educated or not) has been stereotyped as one to be feared by their counterparts, Hispanic Americans have been negatively stereotyped by society due to cultural differences as well. In addition to race and cultural differences being a factor of racism, many individuals have been persecuted based on their religious beliefs.

For instance, the criminal justice system and the war on drugs have mostly affected minority compared, while there have been recent efforts to change the narrative on drug use with a surge in the use of heroin among suburban residents. There is a need for cultural sensitivity when working with diverse populations to avoid clouded judgment and bias.
Topic 1-11
Negative stereotypes and lack of interaction with people from divergent backgrounds have insulated people from the experiences of those who are different. The peoples’ perceptions are largely informed by myths and depiction in the mass media. The idea of who is an America is tied to the dominant and majority segment of the population, who are descendants of largely Protestant descended European Americans. I have been treated differently because of fear as I do not represent what some Ame...
