William Shakespeare’s "Macbeth," is a play filled with action and suspense that raises the emotions of the audience. The author ensures that the theme of self-preservation is enhanced with a lot of clarity in the play. The writer expressed the idea especially in his two main characters, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. At first, the two characters were real people, responsible and respected human life which is the reason why even Macbeth was given a responsibility to serve King Duncan. The two characters became ambitious which drove the positive values at a distance while at the same time attracting the spirit of self-preservation. It made them not regard humanity to be paramount. For example, Macbeth on receiving the prophecies from the witches, he decided to murder Duncan because he was driven by the heart of self-preservation. Despite the fact that his conscience guided him that it was wrong. The wife was too ambitious when Macbeth told her via the letter that was sent and she took a direct approach to satisfy her desires. She cleverly and relentlessly drove her husband to kill Duncan and anyone else that was a threat to their staying in power, but in the end, Lady Macbeth’s conscience caught up with her and hurt her health. Macbeth, dealt with the moral outcomes of his killings much better than the wife, mostly when he told himself that life is pointless and whatever he does won’t matter.
