Study of Psychology in Macbeth
William Shakespeare tragedy of Macbeth is a story of a general who believes in a prophecy made by three witches that he would one day be the king. In Macbeth, William Shakespeare tragedy is about power and personal ambition. The three witches’ prophecy encourages Macbeth that is likely to be the king of Scotland. The prophecy alters Macbeth's behavior from a good soldier to a murderer. His ambitions become evident when Macbeth is encouraged by his wife to kill King Duncan to fulfill the prophecy. Since Macbeth wants to take up the throne, Macbeth sends people to kill Banquo and his sons who were prophesied by the witches that they would also rule Scotland. Macbeth actions were resulting in guilt and fears, making him commit more murder to feel safe while in power. No, this my hand will rather the multitudinous seas incarnadine, making the green red".
The above statement shows the extent of the guilt he felt whereby he admits that the entire ocean cannot wash away all the blood on his hands. Two other scenes that show Macbeth guilt is Act 2 scene 2 that states, "Macbeth shall sleep no more," meaning that Macbeth feelings of guilt cannot permit him to live peacefully. Even before he committed the murder, Macbeth’s guilt is seen through hallucination of a floating dagger. Hallucinations signify how he is consumed by guilt.
