Starbucks is a retailer of specialty coffee, and has expanded its operations from America to the international market, with communication and corporate culture having being critical to the success of its operations (Canadean, 2013). Howard Schultz the founder of Starbucks highlighted organizational culture as being critical to success, basing the culture on the way Starbucks treats the employees (partners) and treat customers as this influences financial performance (Harvard Business Review, 2010). Starbucks has remained competitive by taking into account the internal and external factors that affect business operations, while being true to the vision and mission of the company. The leaders and management at Starbucks create a corporate culture that empowers employees, while focusing on high quality coffee, and good customer service that adds value to the firm.
Values, mission and vision
The core values at Starbucks are to create a culture of warmth and belonging where everyone is welcome. The company also seeks to act with courage while identifying new ways to expand operations. To achieve this dignity, responsibility, dignity and respect, while delivering positive results and being accountable to stakeholders for all results (Starbuck, 2016). Additionally, Starbucks engages the community to ensure environmental sustainability, while seeking profitabilities as a measure to improve performance. The managers then identify ways to translate the core values in the workplace and linking this with performance measures.
The company’s mission is “To inspire and nurture the human spirit – one person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time (Starbucks, 2016).” This is consistent with the need to motivate employees and extending warmth to the customers. The mission statement implies that Starbucks is focused on continued growth over time from one location at a time. On the other hand, the Starbucks vision is to be a responsible brand following the principles and values to guide the employees. Both the vision and mission highlight the objectives focusing on quality of coffee, and increasing value by considering the partners, customers, neighborhood and shareholders
Corporate culture
The working environment at Starbucks highlights the importance of engaging both employees and customer to improve value and growth in the company. Starbucks has a corporate culture where there is warmth and belonging where people are welcome (Bariso, 2015). At the same time, the employees are treated with dignity, respect and transparency. The Starbucks employees work more closely with customers especially those in the frontline, and the corporate culture is suitable where there is warmth and belonging. Strong customer service accountability and high performance have all been crucial to building a culture of excellence (Bariso, 2015).
