Reflection on Matthew: The Gospel of the Messiah

Book Review Instructions:

3.3 Please write your first Reflection Excerpts (RE) on what you have read from Strauss this week.

Your paper on Strauss should cover both chapters. The total word count should be 700 words or more (roughly about 2-3 pages double spaced, but go by word count, not pages).

The reflection should cover the entire chapter of each. For the proper font size, margins, etc., see the Syllabus ("Style Standard" sec. 12). And for different formatting options that include page referencing, see the sample Reflection papers posted in this week's Module. Note: as I already emphasized last week, with Strauss,_you will want to include page references in your RE for full credit. That is why you do not want to purchase a Kindle version; this version does not have proper page references. Proper page referencing is mandatory for full credit. Is this the first time you are writing an RE and want examples? No problem! You can click on the proper link in the Modules (or Files folder) to see some sample REIs and get an idea of what you are supposed to do. As you will see, there are a few different styles of formatting from which you can choose. Select one of the styles (and please do not alternate with other styles on the same assignment.)

The goal in the reflection assignments is to gain vital information about Jesus and the respective topic at hand (for your benefit) and to show me that you have read the textbook content thoroughly. Please do not quote excessively. Grades will be marked down for long or repetitive quoting. Summarize the content of what you are reading, along with the page reference (see the sampler).

If you are still unclear about the RES after viewing the samples, you might want to review the Syllabus again for further information on the RES. If you are still unclear after that, feel free to contact me. Please submit your RE through the "Assignments" link on the left panel of your browser. The REIs are due every Sunday night, unless told otherwise on the Weekly Guide.

Reflection on Matthew: The Gospel of the Messiah
* Matthew makes use of a concise style or approach to his writing, which can be considered reporting (264). Further, he also heavily makes use of the fulfillment formula, which means that he ties the unfolding of events in Jesus’ life to the Old Testament scriptures (264). Aside from creating this connection, Matthew’s author also helps showcase the Jewishness of the book through direct translation from the Hebrew Scriptures (267).
* Matthew makes use of a topical arrangement that is further reinforced through structural signals that make up an outline for the entire gospel (267). However, while it does seem like there is a structural or topical arrangement that Matthew follows, it is highly likely that he simply sought to ensure continuity and transition in Jesus’ story (268).
* Matthew’s gospel appears to be trying to attain a particular goal from the start. He starts the gospel by giving readers the genealogy of Jesus to affirm the fulfillment of the prophecy that the Messiah was the “son of David” (272). With the Israelites having been in exile and lacking the reign of a Davidic king for centuries, there was expectation that the Messiah would bring salvation to the Jews (272). However, as Matthew aptly indicates, Jesus’ messianic role was to save the Jews from sin, and this grace was to extend to the gentiles (273). Surprisingly, Matthew’s genealogy includes outsiders and outcasts. However, these women were a foreshadow of God’s saving grace extending beyond the Jews to the gentiles (273).
* To best capture Jesus’ appearance, Matthew makes use of three identities for him, including ‘the true Israel,’ ‘the Servant of God’, and ‘the Son of God’ (275). In these three, Matthew is able to showcase how Jesus Christ is a representation of God to Israel, a servant with a divine purpose to fulfill, and an embodiment of what true Israelites ought to be (275).
* Matthew presents Jesus as the fulfillment of the Old Testament (276). He draws similarities between Jesus and Moses and paints the picture of Jesus coming with a new message whose purpose is not to demean or differ from Mosaic Law but to raise its &...
