Reading Chapter 15
Chapter 15 covers the beginning of Jesus Christ’s ministry. Specifically, three phases summarize His ministry. These are John the Baptist, the Baptism of Jesus, and the Temptation of Jesus. First and foremost, the story about John, who baptized Jesus, is increasingly unique, bringing along various valuable insights. Four main Gospels cover the story and life of John. These are Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John (516). Many aspects about him exist. For instance, he was a preacher who encouraged people to repent as a way to prepare for the coming of the great one. Josephus referred to John’s baptism as a representative body purification that preceded the soul’s purification by righteousness (517). According to the reading, some historians and researchers have argued that John the Baptist’s ministry did not relate to Jesus but had something to do with John expecting God to avail Himself and bring about the Lord’s Day. Christians are believed to have turned John into Messiah’s forerunner.
Secondly, Jesus’ baptism marked the commencement of his ministry within the public domain. Many historians established that John the Baptist was in charge of baptizing Jesus despite initially rejecting the baptism request from the Messiah. Instead, Jesus insisted that John would perform the act to demonstrate faithful obedience to God’s intention. The representation of a spirit as a “dove” and the voice descending from heaven was symbolic as the latter signified God’s confirmation of His Son’s mission on earth to deliver people from their sins (520). The baptism, alongside the voice from heaven and Spirit, was recorded and covered comprehensively in the New Testament. Thirdly, Chapter 5 also features how Satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness. After the Spirit empowered the Messiah at his baptism, Satan led Jesus into the wilderness for temptations in various forms. For instance, Satan enticed Jesus to throw Himself from the highest point because angels would be down to prevent Him from getting injured (521). This was to prove that He was the Son of the Almighty. However, Jesus objected to the request, citing that it is not fair to test God. These temptations are meant to teach believers the relevance of having faith in Him and worshipping only him.
