The book “African American Pastoral Care and Counseling: The Politics of Oppression and Empowerment” is written by Edward P. Wimberly, an African American pastoral theologian who teaches at the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) (Wimberly, 2006). He has taught in theological schools and understands pastoral care, counseling, and its potential to shape society through much-needed reform. He has experience as a pastoral counselor and has counseled African Americans on family and marriage issues. In his book, Wimberly discusses the role of pastoral care and counseling in freeing African Americans from negative internalized stories, images, and identities to gain personal and political agency and eventual efficacy as full members of society.
