The book provides the audiences with a different perspective of Messiah and his teachings. In this book, the author's main motive was to go back through all the Christian beliefs and traditions to redevelop Jesus Christ as he was. This book is subdivided into three parts; the first part is, Who He Was, which contains the chapters concerning the birth of Jesus Christ, background, temptation, and Philips’s preconceptions. Part one of the book also includes the author's outline of what character traits the Incarnate Universe should comprise. The second part of the book, Why He Came, analyses the reading on the mountain, a subchapter on Christ's mission and Jesus’ death, miracles, and His resurrection. The last portion of the book is What He Left Behind, which comprises subchapters that talk about the ascension of Jesus Christ, the Christian political activism, and the changes Jesus Christ can bring to the world.
The Jesus I Never Knew has a liberal perspective to Jesus Christ. Philip Yancey observes and examines the Gospel details; he overturns the mystic Gospel writings, novels, and films to clarify his points. The author believes that people can learn about Christ by looking at how he is interpreted across artist mediums and celebrated by modern Christians. The author argues that while Jesus Christ visited earth once, he might not return. Instead, Jesus built people a kingdom, and humanity must maintain the domain in his image (Yancey, 2008). He also argues that Jesus Christ does not care about homosexuality but instead, he wants people to be themselves.
The author goes straight to the basis to see how Jesus was before being dirtied by all the church's traditions. Philips’s perspective about Jesus is new or shocking. The guy is, well, a little bit of an outsider, Sophisticated, Cultured, and Stylish enough for the new millennium. This Jesus is well-tailored for our rich, fashionable culture. From women's rights to sensitive education for men to better access for the disabled, he's all in. This Jesus even had the foresight to see that the Christian Right will make Him blush and turn away in disgust (Yancey, 2008). When was the last time you heard something like that? Any cocktail gathering in respectable society would be graced with the presence of Yancey's caviar Jesus.
In "The Jesus I never knew," the writer offers a new perspective on the lifetime of Jesus Christ. His life and beliefs have been the subject of much debate. Do we know Jesus Christ? This is the first question that is addressed in this book. While Jesus is depicted as a "Mr. Rogers" character in today's society, this can't be as white and black as the gospel would like it to be by saying, "what authority would execute sir Rogers?" The birth of Jesus and Mary's tale are also included. Unlike what you would hear in church today, this book portrays Mary's tribulations as they were in her moment of need.
