Why Does It Matter That Young People Do Theology?
Millennials represent a generation that faces a lot of criticism for various reasons, some of which are justified, and some are hypocritical. I feel that reading is a form of criticism for the millennials and their ever-growing distance from the church. The question of whether it matters whether young people should do theology has been answered perfectly, especially after clarifying the perspective from which the question was intended. In this case, the answer does not simply lie within the rationalization of the importance of theology. Rather, I think the reading seeks to find out specifically how theology applies to the millennials due to their unique characteristics.
Most of the arguments made are acceptable, and a few could be criticized. For example, labeling young people as unchurched and theologically illiterate is accurate. The accuracy of this description is manifested through statistics that show fewer youth attend churches. In my opinion, modern youths are not as concerned with the church as the earlier generations. Perhaps, the reading is making an argument that this situation can change, and theology is the pathway to rectifying this issue. The main criticism of the class reading is the description of the millennials as lazy due to their over-reliance on gadgets that seek to simplify tasks and life. The criticism could be based on the fact that these gadgets and other technologies are the results of years and years of development, which means that even earlier generations have all been pursuing this goal. This rationalization explains cars, airplanes, electricity, and the telephone, among other developments. Therefore, theology might not make the millennials less lazy, and the worldviews will continue to emerge as access to information becomes easier with time.
Christian Worldview and Science
This class reading appeared to be one of the most interesting, considering that it sought to reconcile religion and science. At this point, I have come across debates and writings that pit religion against science, especially where religion is perceived as illogical in explaining the natural world. Having this in mind, I was tempted to take a more critical approach to this reading since it takes the side of Christianity and pits it against the rest of the religions. The rationalization for this is plausible – that is, if a religion construes nature as an illusion, then there would be no point or possibility of exploring nature. At this point, it becomes inevitable to agree with these arguments and adopt the position that, indeed, the development of science has significantly supported Christian philosophies. Several clarifications are also worth applauding, including drawing a line between nature and God. If scientists were to believe that the world is controlled by a supernatural being, then nature and its mechanisms that control how the world functions could be perceived as God.
