1 Reflection on Chapter 5 - The Religious Setting
As described in this chapter, the main fundamental belief that differentiates Judaism from other polytheistic religions is the practice of monotheism. Consequently, the main belief of Judaism is that there is only one supreme God, Yahweh, and others are just mere gods. (158). Hence, through God entering into a covenant with his people, the Israelites were accorded the responsibility of remaining faithful to God's Laws. Israelites believed that through the obedience of God's Law, a lot of blessing and prosperity would be experienced in the land of Israel. (159). In Judaism, what acted as the main religious institutions were a temple and numerous synagogues. The temple was in Jerusalem, while the synagogues were scattered throughout the empire.
As depicted, Judaism comprises several groups, including the Sadducees and Pharisees. The Sadducees are associated with having greater political power, while the Pharisees were deemed to have a significant amount of support from the people. (169). Furthermore, unlike the Sadducees, the Pharisees are said to have cultivated hope in the coming of the Messiah and also believed in the resurrection. The other group of individuals that were part of Judaism were the Essenes, who had similar beliefs to the Pharisees but slightly differed because they were more separatist. (171). The other matter that made them different from the Pharisees is that they strongly believed in the end time. They believed that during the end times, God would come to judge various leaders of Israel who were wicked, and the same judgment would befall the Romans.
Additionally, the literature sources for the first-century wish life include the Philo, Josephus, and the Dead Sea scrolls. The scrolls are described as comprising biblical, extra-biblical, and sectarian literature (180). Furthermore, Apocalypticism is deemed a Jewish movement that believed in God for the destruction of those that were wicked and the deliverance of the righteous. They also looked up to God for the establishment of God's just rule. Therefore, the Jewish literature comprised the Hebrew scripture, the second temple, and postbiblical Jewish literature.
