Without taking into account the histories of race, gender, and sexuality, the history of religion around the globe cannot be fully comprehended. For decades, civil rights political and social movements have sparked interest in political identity and community interest, particularly those linked to racial justice and women's rights movements. These movements have influenced scholarly practice, not least by encouraging the development of new analytical approaches, including intersectionality, critical race theory, and feminist and queer theory. As a result, they are changing how religious scholars around the world, particularly in the West, examine the nexus of race, gender, and sexuality, as we will discuss.
Select theologies, both based on Christianity and social rights for certain minority groups, "groups of color," have identified how race has contributed to inequities. For example, Alicia Vargas quoted, "The discourse of the life of Latinas in the United States is an ever-continuing project of de- and reconstruction, of shifting contextual identities." by this, the author was trying to demonstrate how the Latina group in America faces racialism. She makes the case that, despite America's racial divides, people should learn that we are all one in Christ. Because Jesus died on the cross for all of us, he even exhibited this in his career by associating with sinners and gentiles, whom Jews considered unclean. The author's key attributions to today's Christianity life may be noticed when she tries to show how the Latina community stands in faith for them to be empowered. "Latinas' faith in Jesus Christ as our Savior empowers Latinas to take action for individual and communal self-affirmation and responsibility and to deconstruct through our diverse praxis the oppressive categories that attempt to trap us." However, the text fails to explore how religion might be effectively used to overcome racial disparities in today's minority communities.
