Reflection Excerpt on the Gospel of the Suffering Son of God
Jesus Christ, the son of God and the Messiah, came to save the world from its sins. He obediently suffered as a Servant of the Lord and as a model of sacrifice and suffering to pay for our sins. This reflection of Christ is given on account of the gospel according to Mark. In earlier days, the gospel, according to Mark, was not given much weight as people believed it was merely an abbreviated summary of the gospel, according to Mathew. The view later changed when it was discovered that the gospel, according to Mark, was the first to be written (215).
Mark gives his account similar to an on-the-spot news report. The narrative, according to Mark, is fast-moving, vivid, and action-packed. The accounts narrate Jesus as the Servant of God, the Messiah, as He spreads his good news across Galilee to friends and foes alike. In His missions, He healed the sick, cast out demons, and taught with great authority together with his disciples. Dramatically, Mark invites his readers to be part of the Messianic world and experience, to await the coming of the Messiah and receive God's promised salvation.
An interesting fact while reading the gospel according to Mark is the excessive use of the Greek word eutys which translates to immediately. In contrast, the word appears only twice in the gospel according to Mathew and once in Luke (216). The term is a perfect example and proof of how fast-paced Mark gave his account of Jesus. An additional style evident in the gospel according to Mark is how Mark groups events to achieve a rhetorical effect. An example can be seen when Mark narrates a collection of exorcisms and healings by Jesus as a show of His authority. Mark immediately follows these events with a series of controversies that brings conflict among religious scholars. Similarly, Mark collectively brings the parables by Jesus to teach about the Kingdom of God. Mark manages to highlight themes through this rhetorical nature of bringing events together.
Adding to the rhetoric employed by Mark in his narrations, he brings intercalation. Intercalation is a literary device that serves as a distinctive rhetorical feature and place.
