3.3 Please write your first Reflection Excerpts (RE) on what you have read from Strauss this week.
Your paper on Strauss should cover both chapters.The total word count should be 700 words or more (roughly about 2-3 pages double spaced, but go by word count, not pages).
The reflection should cover the entire chapter of each.For the proper font size,margins,etc., see the Syllabus ("Style Standard" sec. 12). S-reflection of Strauss Chapter 12
* The questioning of the Gospels’ reliability began with the depiction of the Passion of the Christ, whereby Romans believe it is the accurate description of what happened to Christ. At the same time, opposers argue it is anti-Semitic for portraying Jews as murderers (p.464).
* It is difficult to read the gospels without presuppositions. However, they are essential in developing subjective arguments on the Gospels’ historical value, which can either be philosophical or theological. For instance, the anti-supernatural worldview believes there are no miracles and Jesus was just a Jewish prophet or wisdom teacher. The theological presupposition believes in the existence of a supernatural being as documented in the Bible (p.464).
* Assessing gospel texts as blank states is impossible, as presuppositions help make objective claims (465). Presuppositions also provide objectivity of truth by weighing the evidence to determine whether it is trustworthy (465).
* Eddy and Boyd argue that the bias accusation against Evangelists who wrote the Gospels is untrue as this would mean that holding certain convictions about a subject is wrong, which is inaccurate (p.465).
* Eddy and Boyd believe that presuppositions and assumptions of the Gospels’ nature can begin with a hermeneutic of suspicion or trust. Hermeneutic of suspicion assumes that Gospels are human documents just like other historical literature, and in case of difficulties understanding it; the material is considered an error. A hermeneutic of trust assumes that the documents are the Word of God, and if disputed, people put faith on them that they are accurate (p.456-456).
* Eddy and Boyd argue that the burden of proof in establishing the authenticity of the Gospels lies with the individual making a claim. Also, it can shift to the writer or historian if their trustworthiness is established; hence people put faith in them and their work (p.466).
* According to Luke, gospel writers write accurate history. Verification of his work is done through analysis of historical references as documented in Acts, where he is considered a thorough investigator of names, spaces, and titles. Also, his strong sense of the “spirit of the times” makes him a reliable historian (p.468).
