The human brain in God’s perspective; is one of the most complex organs in the body. It undertakes most of the body functions, acting as a control center much as a processor is to a computer. The brain together with the spinal cord links up the entire tissues in the body through the nervous system for the aim of controlling our sensory, cognitive, emotional, physical, and motor abilities. Many psychologists and scientists have tried to explain the working of the brain and its link to spirituality. However, most of these arguments take a humanistic approach and cannot address the complex functionality of this system. The brain however, in a Godly perspective serves both natural and spiritual purposes imperative to humanity existence.[Koh. "BRAIN AND MIND: A CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE." (1993).]
The Bible informs us that God created us in His image and likeness. This means we have the ability to think, reason, decide, choose, communicate, have personal will, and create relationships just like God. Koh shows that the brain is a complex organ and can perform more powerful functions than the computer systems. The ability to respond to our environment and make choices lies deep in our brains. Therefore, the brain remains the position where God placed the might of human consciousness and functionality. Koh suggests that it is through the brain that that our minds conceive their power concerning thoughts, feelings, memories, and emotions. This power is God-given ability to think and choose the best for ourselves. In the Bible in Isaiah 1:8, God says, “Come, let us reason together,” shows our relationship with the supreme creator. He gave us the ability to be like Him for the benefit of interactions and making informed decisions.[So God created man in His own Image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them – Genesis 1:27.]
This also proves that He designed our brains to think independently according to our will and differentiate the right from wrong.[Then the Lord God said, “Behold the man has become like one of us, to know the good and evil..” – Genesis 3:22.]
God created our brains with the ability to retain memory concerning things in the past and the future. Koh posits that our brains can store memories for over 100 years old and retrieve them in time. The unique ability of the brain led the Psalmists to exclaim, “For thou did form my inward parts, thou did knit me together in my mother's womb; I praise thee, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; wonderfully are thy works”. In his book ‘God and the limbic brain,’ Dudley posits that our creation in the image of God was for a scientific necessity and not by a religious bias. The brain fuses both the conscious and unconscious realms through our self-awareness and our reactions to the purpose we have in this environment.
