Dear Dr. Sharma
Hello Dr. Reshma-Krishnamurthy-Sharma, I hope you are doing well. My name is ___________, and I am a professor at the University of ____________. I am writing this email about your article, The New Language Landscape, published in the Hindu. Language has been an important topic for me, prompting me to do further research, and I even made a Ted Talk, How Language Shapes the Way we think," in 2019. I realized that we are addressing the same topic about language (English) and culture and how language influences a culture change. However, based on how you discussed the spread of English in India, what is the connection between the use of universal language and cultural change and, secondly, how does universal language threatens linguistic diversity? I am writing this email to discuss how the use of a universal language, such as English, has changed the culture because people do not seem to take pride in their mother tongue. Some people even prefer teaching their children English instead of their mother tongue. I will also discuss how the use of universal language has contributed to the loss of indigenous languages.
I agree with you that the use of English has influenced people's behaviours. As you stated in your article, "It may seem ordinary, but the toddler replies in a language that was never her grandma's or even her mother's own" most children do not even know their mother tongue (Sharma par. 1). I agree that accepting English as a universal language has changed the culture because some children do not even understand their mother tongue. The culture has changed such that modern children are introduced to a universal language, English, as their first language. Toddlers are usually eager to learn new things and will learn whatever is introduced to them as they grow up. This explains why in my Talk, it was easier for a five-year-old from the Kuuk Thaayorre, an Aboriginal community in Australia, to give direction since, from the moment the child was born, he/she learned how to use directions as a language of communication (Boroditsky par. 5).
I also agree that lang...
