CURRENT LABOR PROBLEMS. Literature & Language Term Paper

Term Paper Instructions:

How and why do corporations pursue the “fissured workplace” and what are the implications for workers?

CURRENT LABOR PROBLEMS FINAL EXAM
You have one question to answer.
It’s worth 30 points. There are no requirements for how much or how little you write in order to answer each question.  I’m looking for the right answer—logical and coherent paragraphs and nothing more.  So the length is totally up to you and whatever you think it takes to answer each question and get full credit.
A few tips (same as the mid-term): I am not interested in long quotes or citations.  You need only use the assigned readings and class discussions to answer the questions.  I also encourage you to refer to the handouts and documentaries and/or other media that we have used throughout the second half of the semester. And in terms of structure, you will get more points if your answer is well organized with good a introduction and conclusion.  Finally, I would encourage you to a develop good outline of your answer before you start writing.  A good outline will insure that you don’t forget important information and it will help you organize your thoughts into logical, coherent answers.
Q1. (30 Points)
How and why do corporations pursue the “fissured workplace” and what are the implications for workers?
Your answer should include the following: The business strategies that underlie the fissured workplace; The impact the fissured workplace is having on how work is organized; How the fissured workplace determines the conditions of work in factories and warehouses around the globe and right here in New Brunswick; The combination of technology and work organization that makes the model so efficient; and whatever else you can think of that will help you to explain the fissured workplace.  Big Hint: Your answer should include a conversation about the Sweating System (or as New Labor describes it “The Cheating System”) and some discussion of the impact that the fissured workplace is having on workers (The stuff from Emily Guendelsberger’s “On the Clock”) as well as some reasons think that there might be ways to alter and/or reform the fissured workplace.

Fissured Workplace
The 20th century has seen many corporations hire many workers making the basis of the U.S economy. However, maintaining the employer-employee relationship seems to be given a lower priority in comparison to maintaining client relationships for these organizations. Large corporations have turned to outsource work to small corporations that have of late been increasing in number in the market. The fissured workplace has resulted in various implications that impact the economy profoundly such as low wages, reduced benefits, lack of good health and safety coverage, and an increasing gap in income inequality (Weil, 2014). Based on this perspective, the fissuring or splitting of functions, which initially were internally managed, has been used as a business strategy allowing corporations to be more focused and drive costs down. This piece of work seeks to explore the reasons behind fissured workplace and its impacts on workers
To start with, the fissured workplace is not like any other usual business as it involves contracting services to other small-scale companies (Weil, 2017). Large corporations like Walmart, at times, cannot ship orders direct to clients. In that case, they will hire a company like Uber to make all deliveries to clients. In that case, the strategy used by big corporations is to use fewer costs by outsourcing services to small and medium companies and simultaneously driving down costs.
The organization of work has also changed, given a fissured workplace. The current workplace has changed a lot. Employment is not hedged between employer-employee relationship but on the client only (Weil, 2014). The basic terms of employment, including the hiring process, evaluation payment policies, training, and coordination of activities, are not carried out by multiple companies. Responsibilities for conditions also seem to have been overtaken by other factors due to multiple organizations being involved in the process. The workplace seems to have fissured like the way a rock develops cracks, which spread over time.
Under the fissured workplace, the conditions of work in factories and warehouses globally have also been affected in myriad ways. Manufactures in factories manufacture products after which they...
