Paper: (1 x 200= 200) Description: Every student in Phil. class is required to write a philosophy paper, minimum 1000 word count. The title page must include your total word count for your entire paper. This includes the entire content of your paper, from title page to cited source page. It is to be double spaced, 12 font Times New Roman, MLA format, minimum two sources. The book and the notes can be used as sources, also academic journals, websites etc. Title page and works cited page required.
IMPORTANT! Mode of Submission: CANVAS-Assignment; This paper must be submitted online; to be posted in the assigned Canvas Module. It will automatically submit your work to Turnitin. You will be able to see the similarity report. You may revise and resubmit your work as many times as you wish before the due date. If you plagiarize you will receive a zero for the assignment grade. All quoted and gleaned material must be encased in parentheses or if over 4 sentences must be indented. Your quoted material must also be referenced to your citation page. Introduction
Philosophy of religion covers broad and varying themes ranging from the history of religion, metaphysics, value theory, arts, and science among other subject areas. Several philosophers have put forwards different arguments to establish a rationale in the two contrasting aspects of religion. René Descartes is one among many philosophers who presents theistic arguments on the existence of God. In his publication “Mediation on The First Philosophy,” there are two instances where Descartes attempts to argue about the existence of God: in Meditation III and in Meditation V (Bayne 10). Atheists could oppose philosophers like Descartes with the opinion that the concept of believing in the existence of God only serves to end the seemingly infinite loop of the existence of things that can be proven otherwise. Descartes, in his mediation, points out some important arguments that have been criticized and accepted in almost equal measure.
Meditation III
Descartes first attempts to prove the existence of God in the Third Meditation: The existence of God. His arguments are based on the fact that as a matter of him meditating about God, an idea of which must have originated from somewhere simply proves that there exists a supernatural being. His arguments in a general form imply anything and everything cannot emerge from anywhere, and there can only be one cause, and that is God. His arguments in the Third Meditation attribute God as omnipresent, omnipotent, an infinite being, and also whose ideas cannot be manipulated by any other inferior being. A different perspective that Descartes took to prove the existence of God is arguing that he can trace back his family linage to a supernatural being that is the beginner of it all, that is God. With an element of perfection that he deduced from himself, Descartes claimed that nothing as perfect could have come from anything less perfect, asserting that God is perfect supernatural.
The approach with which Descartes in Third Meditation uses to explain the existence of God utilizes cause and effect analogy, which indidates that it is a cosmological argument. According to Reichenbach, cosmological arguments deduce the existence of a unique being from factual evidence that exists in the universe (10). In the case of Descartes' argument, the existence of God is the trigger for his idea about God, which in this respect is the effect. Also, Descartes distants himself from arguing in an angle that supports a certain faith, a clever approach to influence atheists and believers of varying faiths. A bold declaration by Descartes that there is no other perfect being than God is seen when he argues that the meditator, in the likeness of God, cannot be the creator.
Meditation V
The second proof of God’s existence by Descartes comes in the Fifth Meditation: the essence of material things, and the existence of God considered a second time. The Fifth Meditation takes a different route from the Third Meditation, this time introducing the inanimate beings.
