Guns Should (Not) be More Heavily Regulated

Term Paper Instructions:

Write a paper in which you argue for a practical thesis. I have suggested several theses below, but if you’d like to choose a different topic to discuss, just run it by me.
- Utah’s legislature should (not) limit industrial water use to preserve the Great Salt Lake.
- Recreational drugs should (not) be legalized in Utah.
- You should (not) leave Cedar City after graduation.
- Social media sites should (not) face tighter regulation.
- The US government should (not) cease all new oil drilling projects.
- Guns should (not) be more heavily regulated.
- Animals should (not) be used in testing (you could narrow this to specific kinds of testing, or make a more general argument).
In the paper you must make (at least) three arguments for your conclusion, two objections to those arguments, and a response to the objections. Somewhere in your arguments for your thesis or your objections you must include at least one valid deductive argument and one strong inductive argument. You also must include at least one fallacy (this can be in either one of your arguments or in one of the objections). You should also point out the fallacy (if you used a fallacy in one of the primary arguments, point out the fallacy in one of your objections. If you include the fallacy within your objections, point it out in the response). You are also encouraged to use an argument by analogy, where you can point out a disanalogy or counter analogy either in the objections, or in the responses.
Note: the fact that you’re supposed to use a fallacy shows that not all of your arguments need to be good! But some of them should be!
Please include:
- A short introduction in which you introduce the topic you’ll be discussing
- At least three arguments for your conclusion (see specifications above)
- At least two objections to your arguments
- A response to both/all objections
Your paper should be around 3 pages; between 2 and 4 is fine. Formatting: 12 pt. font, standard font such as Times New Roman, Garamond, Cambria, etc., double spaced, 1 inch margins.

Regulation of Guns
Discussing American history and culture would be incomplete without mentioning guns and the repugnant stain of gun violence. The American gun culture is among the most revered sub-cultures in the country, and any legislation aimed at controlling ownership is often met with furiously politicized objection. However, the unprecedented peacetime gun violence in the last decade provides a valid reason to rethink this subculture in that guns should be more heavily regulated.
The core aim of tightening controls or legislation around gun ownership in the United States is to deter and prevent gun violence. America has more guns in its citizens' hands than any other country. Indeed, it is the only place in the world where civilian guns outnumber people. For every 100 Americans, there are 120 guns (Fleming, McLean, and Tatalovich). At the same time, it is only in the United States where gun violence against civilians is common. Four months into 2023 alone, there have been more gun-related deaths than the number of days. In other words, among high-income countries, gun-related death rates (suicide & homicide) are excessively rampant in America. If gun violence is to be deterred or stopped, then access & ownership regulations should be tightened.
Secondly, when most people own guns, more people will want to. According to Pierre (pr. 5). The sight of a firearm instills a sense of fear in people, prompting them to feel that they also need guns to prevent themselves from other (wrong) people with guns. In a recent PEW Survey, Schaeffer (pr. 9) established that personal protection is the core reason for gun ownership. Nevertheless, America has the most advanced security & investigative agencies and the most armed police unit. This alone should eliminate this level of fear that makes people feel they must own a gun to be safe. In other developed countries where civilians do not own guns, crime rates like assault or b...
