In the United States, the gun control debate has existed over years. The American constitution’s second amendment allows American citizens to own and bear guns and firearms. Citizens are allowed to apply for firearms licenses, but the conditions differ from one state to another. Therefore, United States Citizens are allowed to possess guns and firearms after providing evidence of training and proper cause standards which are a requirement to carry out firearms for self-defense. However, significant debate emerge as to whether individuals should be allowed to carry firearms or not. This is after the rise of mass shootings of innocent people and perpetrators. This paper supports the court's decision to regulate gun and firearm ownership.
On June 23rd, 2022, the United States supreme court made a ruling to deny firearm licenses to Robert Nash and Brandon Kosh arguing that they lacked proper cause standards which are a requirement to carry out firearms for self-defense ( New York State Rifle and Pistol Association Inc. V. Bruen). The case was between New York State Riffles Association V Bruen. Consequently, reasonable cause requires an applicant to show a specific need for self-protection distinguishable from the general public. However, Koch and Nash appealed their case. They argued that increased robbery and violence cases in the neighborhood required them to carry firearms for self-protection. Therefore gun ownership should be regulated to reduce crime rate as well as protect women.
In addition, regulating guns and creating a strict licensing procedure would reduce death resulting from firearms and guns. Between 1999 and 2016, the number of death registered from guns and firearms was 336,579, of which 58.8% was suicide, 37.2% were homicide, and 2.0% were unintentional (Gramlich). Women are the most affected individuals when it comes to gun violence. According to Gramlich, five women are murdered in America every day and their risks are 500% higher compared to men.
