Introduction
With every passing season, the world experiences different events and situations that leave many people traumatized. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, millions of people were exposed to horrific realities as they saw loved ones succumb to a strange yet seemingly simplistic virus. Events such as pandemics, wars, familial problems, and one’s surroundings greatly influence and shape people’s lives. With regards to trauma, Kessler et al. (2017) note that many people in the world are exposed to trauma though responses are different. In their study, the researchers discovered that 70.4% of their respondents were exposed to a traumatic experience or episode in their life. These experiences ranged from rape, being a victim of stalkers, and an unexpected loss of a loved one. Provided herein is a discussion centered on trauma, with a keen eye on understanding what it entails, who is likely to be exposed to trauma, as well as other aspects of trauma, including determinants of trauma, correlation of trauma and substance abuse, and the pathophysiology of trauma.
What is the correlation between trauma and substance abuse?
As already indicated, billions of people in the world experience trauma in their lives. In the U.S., Galindo (2020) indicates that about 223.4 million people in the U.S. have experienced a traumatic event in their lives. This means that many people are grappling with events that psychologically troubled them, and left them hurt and in need of healing. For a majority of such people, it takes something else to replace the pain they are or have been feeling, hence the connection between substance abuse and trauma. The National Child Traumatic Stress Network (2008) notes that access to psychoactive substances to trauma victims offers a way out for most trauma victims. As a way to numb or dull the effects of the traumatic events in one’s life, some trauma victims happen to indulge in substances like alcohol and other drugs that are thought to offer an escape route. Therefore, a significant number of trauma victims happen to try self-medication mechanisms that often involve the use of substances to help curtail the impact or effect of symptoms.
What is the definition of trauma?
According to the American Psychological Association (2022),, trauma is “an emotional response to a terrible event like an accident, rape, or natural disaster.” The definition of trauma does not entail a difficult explanation. After a horrific event, people respond differently. Some people will react to the death of a loved one by being sad, looking confused, experiencing different levels of anxiety, showing agitation, dissociating from people, or remaining numb. These responses entail the aspect of trauma, and while physicians are dealing with victims, they often use such symptoms to trace the origin of a problem. Therefore, these are quite crucial.
