Describe your vision of the future of health and healthcare. What are the key characteristics: clinical, administrative, and financial?
The future of healthcare is bound around clinical, administrative, and financial hinges. There is a need to have a future whereby the approach to health would be based on healthy lifestyle promotion, early detection, and overall, a disease prevention strategy backed up by proper coordination of services. The current practice is based on treating sicknesses or diseases, which in most cases is usually on patients who are already chronically sick. This is mainly due to how society is wired and the financial constraints that most of these patients typically experience in their normal lives.
To this end, my vision for the future of healthcare is that there is a need to have a situation whereby the most disadvantaged portion of the society that is financially challenged can have either a preventative approach to healthcare by early detection and healthy lifestyle promotion, or improved techniques that would lower healthcare costs and increase the accessibility of these individuals to medical insurance. The goal is to ensure that future generations will have equal access to quality healthcare if it gets to that, or equally useful knowledgebase about how to embrace healthy styles of living if they are to avoid the more daunting exercises of medical care.
The current healthcare costs are quite high, even for normal citizens. There has been too much commercialization of the healthcare sector in the country, something that needs to be keenly and delicately reviewed. This has made it almost impossible for ordinary people to access quality medical care. In the future, there is need to have a situation where these costs are either brought down or the sector provides certain medical incentives for this disadvantaged portion of the population. The essence of equal and quality healthcare for all is that everyone can comfortably afford the costs involved, especially when dealing with chronic diseases.
From a clinical perspective, diagnosis and treatment often become expensive due to the back and forth involved in managing the patients. Too much time is wasted, and this amounts to more money being incurred. Matters to do with nutrition and efficiency in treatment are usually greatly hampered by the need to do more. Nurses get overwhelmed due to too much work that technology would otherwise solve.
Therefore, there is a need for a review in the medical sector, which would signal a paradigm shift from a cash-first system to that a health-first or recovery-first system. It is worth noting that the current system greatly awards or rewards the procedure rather than the final outcome. It is quite common to see patients dying after a very expensive medical procedure, leaving their families cash-strapped while making the doctors and the respective medical facilities richer. It beats logic to pay expensively for a life lost. Such complexities and technicalities continue plaguing the medical sector at present, which need to be rectified in the future.
